Join the Spud Club today Spud's story Many people will know Spud's story but for those of you that don't here's the short version.... Spud was found on a busy road on his own when he was a tiny newborn kitten. We think his feral mummy had dropped him while moving her litter and didn't come back for him. He was picked up by a member of the public and taken to the vets and they rang Yorkshire Cat Rescue to see if they would take him and give him a chance. YCR's CEO, Lynn took him - she was his first foster mummy. As he was so small it was touch and go for a while; he also had a huge ulcer in his left eye. The vets thought he would lose his eye or at least his sight in that eye but decided to try with drops to see if they could make it better. This was caused by the flu virus. One of the nights when Lynn thought she was losing him she whispered in his ear .... " if you live you can stay with us and we will love you forever, but you have to try as hard as you can ". Determined little Spud tried his hardest and kept fighting, after days and nights of 2 hour bottle feeds and eye drops multiple times a day he got stronger and stronger. Then his tummy got poorly and his botty was raw - Lynn had to teach him to eat solid food at 3 weeks old. It was tough but they managed it together. Because Spud was on his own he needed other kittens to play with to help his development and to help him learn to kitten.... baby cats can't do that on their own. So our boy was sent to his second foster mummy as she had two cat flu kittens a little bit older than Spud. Ella, Georgia and Spud had so much fun!! They played and played until they fell asleep and Spud started to learn about being a kitten. Amanda, his second foster mummy was the best ... she gave him big cuddles and kisses and always made sure he was loved and cared for. Lynn picked him up once a week and took him to work with her so he could see all the YCR team at the centre. Then the internet broke with everyone going crazy on the YCR Facebook page, everyone wanted YCR to have him as their mascot ........ well we listened and Spud had an interview on the day they held an event called Baked To Purrfection, of course he was amazeballs and got the job right away :) So Spud now lives with his mama and daddy, his sister Isadora, and his three brothers Merlin, Buzz and the crazy thing that is Dennis! Although Spud lives with Lynn, he goes to work with her at YCR when he can as he takes his mascot duties very seriously. Being the mascot means that YCR owns Spud and pays for all of his bills he just lives with Lynn. On average they say it costs £12,000 for the care of a cat over its lifetime, so that means Spud wants to make some money to pay for himself and to help all the other cats and kittens like him at YCR. Spud's mascot role will be to help promote YCR and show people that kittens like him can survive given the right care and love but that does cost money. Spud spreads the word about the good work everyone involved with the Charity does and how hard they all work to save as many cats/kittens as they can each year. And this is why he started The Spud Club, This is an exclusive club for members only, you pay a one off payment of £20 for a years membership, over that year you will receive cards and letters from Spud along with a small gift that is exclusive to the Spud Club.
