The past two days have been a whirlwind of taking on two of the most urgent emergency intakes our centre has ever seen. In both these intakes the cats have been signed over into our care as animal cruelty cases, so we are unable to discuss details further but please know the right actions are taking place behind the scenes.
We have taken on 4 kittens and an adult cat, both with the most severe eye (and other) complications we have ever seen. Our white adult girl has been named Penelope and has been raced to the vets today for emergency specialist surgery. She is on strong pain relief and being kept overnight before being transferred to another vets tomorrow for her emergency appointment. At this stage the vets are unsure how they will close up her eye given how damaged the outer tissue has become. She also has a tumour that needs looking at on her tummy 😓
Our 4 kittens have been named Albert (ginger), Esther (tabby + ginger), Florence (tabby worst eye), and Sadie (black). They all have one of the worst causes of untreated cat flu we have ever seen, plus a secondary bacterial infection. They have fleas, worms, and are incredibly unweight. For kittens at 10/11 weeks old they are measuring weights of 6/7 week old kittens 💔
Albert has severe bi-latteral ulcers in both eyes and his left is possibly ruptured. It's highly possibly this will have to be removed at a later date. Esther has suspected adhesions on her left eye causing the insides of her eye to be glued shut. She is the smallest weight of all 4 weighing in at 680g when she should be 1200g + 😫 Florence has ulcers in her mouth and one of her eyes has ruptured and will also probably need to come out at a later date. Sadie has Conjunctiva and the inside of her eyelids have fused and healed together. The vets believe this is an old injury again left untreated. She needs surgery at a later date to try and get her eyelids open so they can inspect the eye underneath and check for ulcers and others complications.
All are on liquid antibiotics that they will need twice a day. They have prescribed medicated eyedrops that they will need 3 times a day. They are on anti inflammatories and strong pain relief, as well as flea and worm treatment. They will be flea combed daily and their eyes need to be bathed with warm water 3 times a day. They were raced to the vets yesterday for an emergency appointment and will be going back in a week. They will also be on a high quality diet to try an increase their weight at a safe pace ❤️‍🩹
We are looking at around 2-3 eyes that will need to be removed by emergency surgery, as well as a multitude of medications and constant care from our team who also have other cats at the centre to look after. We are also looking at a potential surgery to remove a tumour from Penelope.
We are URGENTLY asking for any donations you can spare for these cats. This is life or death and without treatment these cats will continue to suffer at great lengths. It is devastating to see how uneducated some people sadly are when it comes to cat flu and bacterial infections. People don't realise how deadly it can be and no animal should ever feel the pain that these babies have been feeling. We are utterly devastated for them but all we can do is our best from this point forward ❤️‍🩹
Any donations are greatly appreciated to help get these cats back on track.... thank you so much in advance...
